i am taking printmaking as an elective this semester and wow, it is just what i needed. it has no required books or outside reading/homework and when i am in the studio i am in the studio. i get to relax, refocus my brain on something completely different and be present.

the print above is a mess up, a throw away on newsprint, but there is something about its not perfectness that is attractive to me, even somewhat poetic. there is beauty in imperfection.

calvin received this 'charlie brown' hat today from his auntie crissy. it is her own original super cute design. she also sent me a little handmade love for my birthday. there is nothing better than getting something that someone else made. as my pile of half done and haven't started projects is mounting and getting a bit stressful, crissy's gift reminded me of why i love to make gifts for people.

so much reading to do for school this week and so little time. i have post-its ready and the tea is made. i am all set for a power hour. now i just have to open a book...

okay so today is my birthday. which explains my somewhat melancholy mood. maybe this is because it is the end of a cycle and the start of a new one. or because it's a time of reflection on the last year of my life and all the years that came before that. i don't do well with beginnings and endings, i tend to dwell in the middle.

i did come home to find beautiful flowers waiting for me and some wonderful, way too nice for clumsy old me presents, from my hubby.

this next year is going to be a big one for me (i'll me graduating and getting a new job) and many of my closest friends (babies, marriage) i hope to dwell in the middle of it for as long as possible. life is going way too fast for me. i need to take time to slow down. breathe.

i made this blueberry buttermilk cake to take with us to the moutains. it is from this cookbook. i have been thumbing through the pages of this book for about a week now decided what to make first. not only do the recipes (which are divided by color) sound delicious, but the photography is fantastic and inspiring.

we are off to the snow for the weekend (we are supposed to get 8 inches tonight!). see you next week!

i love these pants on calvin. they are so soft and made of organically grown fairly traded cotton. every time i put them on him though i wonder...are they too orange?

tomorrow is the big day (calvin's first birthday). sam took the day off and we have been cooking and getting things ready... and we got our new livingroom rug today! woo hoo! i am so excited that it came before the party. it is super plush and much cozier than the 7 year old ikea rug we had before. i'll post pictures soon.

i received this card in the mail today from ari. it came at the exact right time. i needed to smile. calvin is still sick. 103 degree fever. we are going to see the doctor tomorrow. hopefully he will know what is wrong this time.

birthday crown.. check.

one week until calvin's first birthday and a long to-do list to complete before then, but after some frustrating seam ripping, i just finished his birthday crown and i can cross it off the list. woo hoo! i saw these and just had to make one for calvin. i used wool felt from my stash and some linen tape i ordered from superbuzzy (i think) awhile ago to edge calvin's burp cloths. i put a fabric covered elastic band in the back. i loved embroidering the star. i wanted something to be on the front but i didn't want it to be a big something and the embroidery came out just as i had pictured in my head. simple, but it adds a specialness.

embroidery had been inspiring me as of late. i want to do some embroidery on a quilt or maybe a shirt for calvin...not sure yet. i want this book! (hmmm my birthday is this month...)

it will have to wait until after calvin's birthday because my to-do list is full at the moment. back to work.
